IKN: 18

CHRIST (Deemed to be University)
Department of Languages

On 25 June 2018 the activities of Bhasha Parishat was inaugurated at the K E Auditorium between 9.00 and 10.00 am for I BCOM/ BBA students of Kannada, Hindi, Sanskrit, Tamil and French. Dr. Rajani Jairam, Dean, Student Welfare, Jain University, the Chief Guest of the day spoke on ‘Language and Culture: A symbiotic relationship.’ She mentioned that language is the expression of culture. Culture cannot be given a definite definition. Language is influenced by many factors. Culture comes with practice. It differs from person to person. She quoted a shloka from the Mahabharata and gave the interpretation of it: By birth Hidimbi was Raakshasi but culturally she was a divine being. So Culture goes by societal structure, and a quantitative analysis of Culture is not possible.

Answering a question that she posed about culture being transcultural, she said that it was the usage of language in the right perspective. She said that all Dharmas like Hinduism, Islam, and Christianity have the same philosophy, but expressed in different ways. Citing the episode in the Ramayana when Rama drove Sita out of the house, she said that as a king Rama did his duty, but failed in his duty as a husband. So Micro and Macro cosmology make a relationship. Culture goes by societal structure – she narrated a Parrot story to compare goodness and badness. Bad, mediocre and good qualities are found in ethics, morality and culture. Just as snow is part and parcel of the life of Eskimos, Language and Culture are part and parcel of our life.  She quoted John Keats, Kavi Kalidasa, and T S Eliot’s works and how they have described snow beautifully. Dr. Rajani told students that language and body language should match and that it would be important to know this before entering MNCs.
Faculty members and students actively participated in the programme.
